Isle Royale National Park

This site is dedicated to providing information about Isle Royale National Park located in Lake Superior.  It is meant to be a complete reference for anyone wanting to go there or, just know more about Isle Royale.
I have been to the island of Isle Royale several times now.  It has made an indelible mark on my life and consciousness.  It's wild, desolate, beauty, leaves a feeling you can never forget.  To be in a place miles from civilization, without the existence of a  phone, with only what you are carrying to survive with, is something that can only be experienced.  The variety of plants and terrain seen by merely heading in a different direction or, simply walking on, is quite unique.  From the bare weathered rocky north shore to swamplands, high ridges to numerous lakes and islands, the island has it all.  The animals present on the island are Moose, Beaver, Snowshoe Hares, Squirrels, Fox, Wolves, Ducks, Loons and various bird species.  You are almost guaranteed to see Moose and Fox.  If you are lucky, you might hear the Wolves and, if very very lucky, might even see one.

This site is divided into the following areas all available through the "Site Menu" located on the top and bottom of each page:
About Isle Royale - A brief description of the island, it's history and location.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Common questions most often asked mostly regarding getting to the island and what to expect once you get there.  This is the best place to start if you are thinking of going there.

Web Board - This board is now hosted on another site and run by someone else. It is monitored by many people who have been to the island or, who are planning to go.  It is the best place to ask any questions you might have or read answers to questions that people have asked before.  You will get a variety of opinions and experiences there.  It is the best place to post questions.

Trails, Campsites and Water Guide  - A comprehensive guide to Isle Royale National Park for backpackers.  It is based on my personal experience going to the island since 1996.  I have spent over 60 days on the island backpacking and have been on every trail on the island except two and every backpacking campground except one.  During those trips I have taken notes and shot digital video of the trips.  Since 2001, I have taken a GPS unit and refined a lot of the trail descriptions and distances based on that.  This is a work in progress.  The only reason it is here now it so I can share what is done.  I am constantly adding to this based on reviewing video, notes and taking other trips.  There is a lot to add and refine but, this is it NOW.  Check back for additions.  You are more than welcome to print this out and use it but, please do not post it or publish it anywhere.

Pictures - Hundreds of pictures taken on and around the island.  These pictures will give you an idea of the scenery, wildlife, trails, campsites, history and an overall view of the island.

Trip Reports & Trip Logs - Trip Reports are narratives that have been written detailing individual trips to the island.  These reports will give you a good idea of what to expect and how the experience has effected different people.  Most include tips learned from experience on trips.  Reports are divided into different areas so you may read reports about areas you are thinking of visiting.  The Trip Log provides a listing of people who are currently planning trips or, have taken trips to Isle Royale.  It is meant to enable people to possibly meet or, discuss planned trips with people who are taking or, have taken a similiar trip.  It also includes trips taken in previous years.

Mailing List & Web Ring - There is a Email List set up to exchange information with  other members of the list or, to  recieve current information on the park.  There is also a Web Ring to surf sites dealing with Isle Royale.

Links & Books - Web Links to official and unofficial sites having to do with the island and other informative sites related to weather, backpacking, etc.  Information on books dealing with the island's history and planning trips.
