Chickenbone East
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 3    Group Sites: 1   Fires: No    Tables: No
The campground is .1 miles from the Greenstone Ridge trail and is a very easy walk.  This is the only campground I have stayed in on the island that I didn't think was beautiful.  It lies on a hill above the lake in an open area with small scrub forest and a few trees.  There are no real vistas to be seen except, maybe in the spring, you can see the lake.  The water source (lake) is about .25 miles down a hill which, can be very slippery in the rain.  This is a good alternative to Chickenbone West during the busy season or, if you just want to avoid people.  For good Moose viewing, walk down the trail towards the lake and follow the lake for a bit till the trail opens up near some wetlands at the far east end of the lake.

Group#1 is on the opposite side of the trail from the individual sites.  It has good seating, is very roomy and has 4 maybe 5 good tent sites.  It has a better view than the individual sites.

Chickenbone West
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 6    Group Sites: 3   Fires: No    Tables: No
This is a nice campground right on the lake with an excellent view.  It is also a good area for Moose watching.  This campground can get a lot of people in the busy season and, seems to be on a lot of itineraries for big groups (i.e.. boy scouts, kid camps, etc.).  If it is busy, you can head to Chickenbone East 1.6 miles (Map) away or, up to McCargoe Cove 2.7 miles (Map) away.
All of the individual sites are pretty good at this campground and it is hard to rate one over another.  I'd pick a site here based on the sites taken already and the weather.
Campsite #1: Good sitting area.  3 good tent spaces possibly 4.  Right on the lake.
Campsite #2: Good sitting area.  2 good tent sites, possibly 3.  Across the trail from the lake.
Campsite #3: Very nice sitting.  2 good tent spaces, possibly 3.  A view of the lake.
Campsite #4: Good sitting area. 3 tent spaces, possible 4.  Good view of the lake.
Campsite #5: Nice sitting area.  2 good tent spaces possible 3.  Across the trail from the lake.
Campsite #6: Lots of sitting.  Big open area by the lake.  Three good tent spaces possibly four.
The group sites here are not very good.  They sit up on a hill away from the lake about 400' with barely a view of the lake.  I wouldn't want to stay in any of these.  They do however, have lots of room for tents.

Chippewa Harbor
Shelters: 4    Individual Sites: 2    Group Sites: 1   Fires: Rings or Standing Grills    Tables: Yes
This campground is situated on a harbor quite a ways from Lake Superior.  The harbor has very nice views ranging from cliff and rock to lowland areas.  The campground has a dock and is frequented by boaters and fishermen quite abit.
The Shelters all lie up on a hill overlooking the dock.  Shelters #1 & 2 are right next to each other on one side and Shelters #3 & 4 are next to each other on the other.  The views of the harbor from the shelters are very nice.  If they weren't so close to each other and open, they would be nice to stay in.  If you had the campground to yourself, they might be the place to stay but, boaters could show up at any time.
The individual sites sit back far from the harbor, dock and everything else and do not offer very good views.  It is a long walk to water from these sites.
Site#5 is a very pretty site but, offers no view of the harbor.
Site#6 has the best view of the two but, is a long ways from the harbor.
The group site is south of the shelters and quite a distance from the dock.  It offers a very nice view of the harbor if you walk a short distance.  It is semi-well protected from the winds and offers relatively good water access.
Group#1 has three to four tent sites.
Site Ratings: Shelters= all the same / Individual= #6,5 / Overall= Group#1 or a shelter
Added Attractions:
South of the campground, along a trail that goes through the group site and just past it, there are apple trees.  Further down there is an old small cabin that is pretty interesting.  Note the construction if you visit it.  This same trail, once past the cabin, leads to some huge rocky areas that are possible to climb up offering magnificent views of the harbor and surrounding area.  This was once the location of a fishery.  For more information, go to "Points of Interest" and look under Chippewa Harbor.

Daisy Farm
Shelters: 16    Individual Sites: 6    Group Sites: 3   Fires: No    Tables: Yes
This is one huge campground.  I have always tried to avoid it due to it's size.  However, the first time I did stay here on September 29, 2001, there was nobody else in the entire place!  The second time I stayed here in May, 2002 it was empty again for two nights!  It is a very nice campground with a very nice view of Moskey Basin, Rock Harbor and the Edisen Fishery.
Site Ratings: Shelter= # / Individual= # / Group= # / Overall= #
Added Attractions:
This was once a CCC camp, the town of Ransom and the site of Isle Royale and Ohio Mine.  The board at the dock has lots of neat information on it's history.  For more information, go to "Points of Interest" and look under Ransom, Daisy Farm and Isle Royale and Ohio Mine.
There are apple trees along the shoreline at the east end of the campground.  These have some of the best apples I've found on the island.
Across from the campground, you can view the Edisen Fishery.  You will also hear a buoy bell that marks the Middle Islands Passage.

Feldtmann Lake Campground
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 5    Group Sites: 2    Fires: No    Tables: No
The campground is situated right along the shore of Feldtmann Lake, which can be seen from any site, and faces northwest.   The total mileage for the loop is .2 miles (GPS) from one side to the other.  Feldtmann Lake campground is noted for it's good Moose viewing.  When looking across the lake, it also gives you a great view of the Feldtmann ridge you will be or, have hiked.  Looking across the lake you will see the Greenstone Ridge with Sugar Mountain being the prominent feature.  Looking to the right you will see the Feldtmann Ridge.  The groups sites and individual sites are all .....

Group#1 is on the opposite side of the trail from the lake and about 50 feet from the shore.  It has four to five good tents sites, a pretty thick tree canopy above it, making it a good site in bad weather, and easy access to the lake and beach.  There is a tree at it's lake access with a nice place to sit and relax.
Group#2 is around 25 feet from the shore of the lake.  It has four possibly five good tent sites, a relatively good view of the sky and easy access to the lake and beach.

If you go here, you have to walk the Rainbow Cove Trail.  It is well worth it.

Hatchet Lake
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 5    Group Sites: 3   Fires: No    Tables: No
Hatchet lake campground is .2 miles west of Hatchet lake trail.  The campground is on the south shore of the lake.  Every site has easy access to water.  Most have excellant views of the lake.  Hatchett lake is a small lake so it stays relatively calm.  It is a quiet and serene area most of the time.  Moose are a good possibilty here.  Known fish in the lake are Brook Trout.
Site#1
Site#2 is pretty good
Site#3 has at least 1 good tent site.  It sits close to site 4 and has the same water access as 4.
Site#4 has 2 good tent sites, maybe 3.  It has a nice view of the lake and, where you go down for water, has a stairway and little dirt and wood dock for good sitting.
#5 sits back aways off of the
The group sites are at the east end of the campground.
Group#1 has 3 good tents sites, a nice sitting area and a good view of the lake.  It is close to #2 though.
Group#2 has 4 good tent sites, a nice sitting area and a good view of the lake.  It is close to #1 though.

Huginnin Cove
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 5    Group Sites: 0   Fires: No    Tables: No
Huginnin Cove campground sites wrap around the shore of the cove.  Each site offers an excellent view of Lake Superior and great sunset viewing.
Site#1 is by far, the best site in the campground.  It is the most protected (except for #4), has the best views, the most privacy and has a small pennisula to walk and sit on.  It has one tent pad you can fit two tents on and one other potential pad.  There is another area under a tree that I have stayed in twice however.  It is not perfect but, was worth the tradeoff to stay there.  The seating and table (partially assembled by me) is excellent.
Site#2 has two tent pads with one maybe big enough to squeeze two tents on.  It is right on the lake and IS very cold (brr...) when the wind is coming in.  It has excellent seating and beach access.
Site#3 is right on the lake about 30 feet back.  It has one tent pad that you might be able to squeeze two tents on.  It has a sitting area with excellant lake access with a sitting area there also.  If the wind is coming in, this site will be cold and, the tent pad is made of small rocks.
Site#4 sits back off the water in a Cedar and Fir forest.  It is approximatly 30 yards from the lake.  It has one big tent pad that can fit two possibly three tents.  There is one other potential pad although not flat.  This site is very well protected from wind and rain and would be my second choice for a group of three to four to stay.  It has very good seating but, is up from the lake.  A good bad weather camp.
Site#5 has one tent pad with room for possibly two tents.  It has good seating and a nice view of the lake.  However, it is very open and offers no protectio from any kind of north or north-west wind.  It is right on the water with an easy climb down for pumping.
Site Ratings: Nice weather=#1,2,5,3,4 / Bad weather=#1,4,3,2,5 / Privacy=#1,5,4,3,2 / Overall= #1
Added Attractions:
The trail east of the campground ("North Shore Scenic Trail", my name) offers some very nice views of the lake and, the trail itself, is beautiful.
I have been told of a "blow hole" just west of Huginnin Cove located on top of the rock next to shore.  When the waves hit the rock a blast of air can be felt through the hole.

Island Mine
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 4    Group Sites: 2   Fires: Rings    Tables: No
Island Mine campground is in a small valley just before reaching the Greenstone Ridge Trail.  It is in a relatively dense area of trees that can make it seem dark in the summer or fall and block views of any distance.  In the springtime, before the trees have filled, it offers some very nice views and seems quite open.  There is water available at a stream about 50' from the campground.  Based on my experiences, it seems to be a reliable source of water.  Even in the late fall it is flowing pretty good.  However, I was told that in late August, 2002, the stream ran dry for a bit but, I have never heard of it going dry before so, I would rely on it (and have).
The individual sites are on the west side of Island Mine trail.
Site#1 has 3 tent sites and good seating.  It is very close to the main trail and semi-close to site#2.
Site#2 has 2 to 3 tent sites and very good seating.  It is semi-close to site #1.
Site#3 has 2 to 3 tent sites and good seating.  It is semi-close to site #4.
Site#4 has 3 tent sites and very good seating.  It is semi-close to site #3 but the most remote of the individual sites.
The group sites are on the east side of Island Mine trail.  They are a bit more open to the sky than the individual sites.  In the springtime, you can hear the creek from these sites.
Group#1 has 4 to 5 tent sites and very good seating.
Group#2 has 4 to 5 tent sites and good seating.
Site Ratings: Individual= #4,2,3,1 / Group= #1,2 / Overall= individual#4 or Group #1
Note:
According to what I read somewhere, this campground was first created and opened in 1984.  There was then a very crude log cabin there with a skylight and loft.  The cabin has since been destroyed (by the NPS) and I would guess it's remains are many of the "man-made" boards used in the campsites as seats.  The cabin may have been at the first site area by the camp ground sign.
Added Attractions:
Island Mine, Island Mine Well, Island Mine Cemetary.  For more information, look these up in "Points of Interest".

Lake Desor North
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 3    Group Sites: 0   Fires: No    Tables: No
The campground is .5 miles (Map) or .? miles (GPS) from the Minong Ridge trail.  It is an easy walk in or out of the campground from the ridge.  All of the sites are pretty good here.  All sites have good access to the water and a view of the lake.
Site#1 has 2 maybe 3 tent sites.  Is the most open to the sun (and rain and wind) of the 3 sites.  It has the best view of the lake from the campsite.  The water is about 15’ from camp.
Site#2 has 2 to 3 tent sites.  It has the best rocks near the water for basking in the sun and is pretty protected from the lake winds.  The water is about 20’ from camp.
Site #3 has 2 tent sites.  It is the farthest away from the water.  It is well protected from the wind but, it also receives the least sun.  It is about 30’ from the shoreline.  This is the most secluded of the sites if there are others in camp and that’s what you want.
Site Ratings:2, 3/1,1/3

Lake Desor South
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 7    Group Sites: 3    Fires: No    Tables: No
The campground is .4 miles (GPS) from the Greenstone Ridge Trail.  You go down a small valley in the ridge and walk slowly downward through areas that are usually wet until you come to the campground.  It is situated within 25 to 75' of the lake depending on the campsite.  There are 4 tent sites to the left and 3 sites to the right.  The group sites are to the right .1 miles (GPS) across boards over some wetlands and a small creek.
Individual Sites #1-4 are about 25 feet from the lake.  They are kind of close together and the lake access and viewing isn't too great.  When looking at the lake from these sites, your view over the lake is more northerly so, you do not get a good view of the sunset.
Individual Sites #5-7 are about 75' from the lake.  The are on the opposite side of the trail from the lake and in more of an open area than the first four.  In these you have a further walk to the lake but, a little better view but, still northerly.
Site#1 has 3 tent spaces, good seating and is the most private of the individual sites. The water is harder to get to than any of the other sites though.
Site#2 has 2 possibly 3 tent spaces, good seating and a good view of the lake.
Site#3 has 4 tent spaces, good seating and a good view of the lake.
Site#4 has 3 possibly 4 tent spaces, ok seating and a good view of the lake.
Site#5 has 3 tent spaces and a good view of the lake.  It is close to site #6 and the trail though.
Site#6 has 3  maybe 4 tent spaces, good seating and a good view of the lake.  It is close to site #5 and the trail though.
Site#7 is close to site #6.
Group Sites #1-3 are about 75' from the lake.  For my money, these are the best sites in the campground due to access, view of the lake and they face westerly.  They're also in a birch forest that looks beautiful.  Group Site #1 is in my top ten sites on the island and, top ten sites for a sunset.
Group#1 has 5 good tent sites
Group#2 has 3 to 4 tent sites.
Group#3 has 4 to 5 good tent sites

Lake Richie
Shelters: 0    Individual Sites: 4    Group Sites: 2   Fires: No    Tables: No
Lake Ritchie campground sits on the north shore of the lake.  The lake is a serene and peaceful.  It is a good place to hear Loons and Moose due to the quiet.  It is a good sunrise viewing place in the fall and sunset viewing in the spring.  Around July and August it is excellent for either.  Water is available within 30’ of any campsite.
The indivdidual sites are on the western end of the campground.
Site#1 sits back the fursthest from the lake and is close to site #2.  It has ? tent spots

The campground is .2 miles (map) or .15 miles (GPS) from post at Lake Richie and Rock Harbor trail.  It is a beautiful campground with magnificent views of the shoreline and neat looking terrain.  It has a dock so, there can be boaters but, it doensn't seem as popular as most with docks.
The shelters are all located on the lake with excellant views and easy access to water.  You really can't go wrong with any of them.
Shelter#1 is the closest to the dock of all of the shelter and offers decent privacy.
Shelter#2 probably has the best view of the lake because you can see in both directions and offers good privacy.
Shelter#3 & #4 has good views of the lake but, are close to one and other.
Shelter#7 has a good view of the lake because you can see in both directions but, it is close to #8
Shelter#8 has a decent view of the lake but, is close to #7.
The Individual sites are located opposite the trail from the water but, have easy access and pretty good views of the lake.
Site#5 has the best view of the two but, is closer to the main trail.
Site#6 does not have as nice of view but, is more private.
The group sites are located quite a ways off of the lake and might offer an ok view in the springtime but, that's the only time.
Group#1 is the closer of the two to the lake but, closer to the main trail and dock.
Group#2 offers more privacy and space than #2.

If there is such a thing as a city on the island, this is it.  The campgrounds are just west of the dock, Ranger station and store.  You will walk down past ranger residences on the north and south down a wide trail.  You will pass a water spigot and outhouses before reaching the campground.
*There is a Fire Ring located at the Amphitheater near the harbor.  I've never tried to use it but, I imagine you could.  It is a Fire Ring after all.

Haytown Mine is .19 miles down a trail by the beach.  It is marked by a post.  It consists of a shaft with a fence around it and a slag piles going out towards the lake.  The trail continues past the shaft leading to a stream/creek I call "Haytown Creek".  It is quite pretty and is flowing very good even in the fall.  In the spring, it would be a good place to catch fish running up.

Washington Creek
Shelters: 10    Individual Sites: 5    Group Sites: 4   Fires: No    Tables: Yes
If there were cities on the island, this would be the second largest.  The Chicago of Isle Royale.  The campground is situated on the shore of Washington Creek and is ? miles (GPS) from the post where the Greenstone trail ends and ? miles from Windigo.  It has running water available in the campground along the beginning of the western and middle main trails in and toilet paper supplied in all of the outhouses which are close to any site in the campground.
All of the shelters are situated right on the banks of the creek offering great views of the creek, moose and ducks.  It is also a short walk from most of the sites to Washington Harbor which is very beautiful and, has some great sunsets.  For being as big as it is, it is a great place to stay.  Especially when compared to Rock Harbor.
Shelter#1 is the shelter that is farthest east in the campground.  It has direct access to the harbor.
Shelter#3 is the next closest shelter to the harbor trail and is very nice.
Shelter#6 is at the end of the western main trail into the campground.  It still has easy access to the harbor trail but, is pretty close to Shelter#7.
Shelters#7,8 & 9 are all relatively close to one and other but, not that bad.  Each offer a good view of the creek and are still not far from the harbor.
Shelters#10 & 13 are at the end of the middle main trail into the campground.  They are separated from the other shelters good and tend to be clearer of vegetation so the views are good and you get a bit more sun.
Shelter#14 is between the middle and eastern main trail into the campground.  It is a good distance from other shelters and offers a different view of the creek then most of the others because it is by a bed in the river.
Shelter#15 is at the beginiing of the eastern main trail into the campground.  It has good privacy from all the other shelters but, is close to the trail leading to Windigo.
The individual tent sites at Washington Creek leave something to be desired.  I guess they figure if you're there you are just passing through or, not into "roughing it' in a tent.  The only tent site that sits on the banks of the creek is #2.
Tent#2 is the tent site that is farthest east in the campground.  It is somewhat surrounded by shelters on both sides but, far enough away to be comfortable.  It has a nice view of the creek and easy access to the trail that leads to the harbor.
Tent#4 & 5 are located on the side of the main western trail into the campground and are not located on the creek.  They have 1 to 2 tent sites and easy access to the trail leading to the harbor.
Tent#11 & 12 are located on the side of the main middle trail into the campground.  They have 1 to 2 tent sites.
The group sites have a separate entrance to the east of the individual sites.  I have not explored them.
